Uniting Surgeons. Advancing Abdominal Wall Care.

The AWR Surgeons’ Community (AWRSC) is one of the most dynamic and rapidly growing surgical communities in the world, with close to 5,000 active members and a global footprint extending across continents (we’re leaving Antarctica out-for now).

Founded in 2017 by Dr. B. Ramana, along with Dr. Ramesh Punjani and Dr. Pramod Shinde, AWRSC was created as a non-profit trust to advance the science, skill, and standards in abdominal wall reconstruction and hernia surgery. Since then, it has become a transformative force in how AWR surgery is practiced, taught, and learned-not just in India, but globally.

A Community Like No Other

What makes AWRSC truly unique is its relentless focus on merit, openness, and quality. Our community brings together a remarkably diverse group: from young residents and fellows in training to department heads, deans, and institutional leaders-all enjoying the same level of engagement and inclusion.

Every event, workshop, and academic gathering carries the unmistakable AWRSC hallmark:
Evidence over hierarchy. Debate over reverence. Community over ego.

We foster a convivial, open environment that encourages questions, challenges convention, and puts science first.

Our Global Impact

Over the years, AWRSC has directly trained over 25,000 surgeons, while its indirect reach through its members, events, and partnerships extends far beyond measurable numbers. Several young AWRSC surgeons have risen to national and international recognition, becoming in-demand faculty and torchbearers of our values.

The impact of the AWRSC activities is now unquestioned. It is a pioneering society that has transformed the way hernia surgery is done, learned, and taught in India and many other countries.

One of the most unique phenomena about the AWRSC has been the revelation and installation of talented young surgeons who have quickly shined and become in-demand teaching faculty. Many of them have become torchbearers of modern AWR surgery and the values of the AWRSC.

World-class conferences & academic programs
Hands-on fellowships and training
Live surgical demonstrations with innovators and pioneers
Mentorship of emerging talent

What are those Values?

At the AWR Surgeons Community (AWRSC), our work is guided by a shared commitment to advancing the science and art of Abdominal Wall Reconstruction and Hernia Surgery through excellence, education, and ethical practice.

The AWRSC has been globally recognized to be a force in the field of hernia education. Some of the best societies have embraced it as global partners, including the American Hernia Society, the British Hernia Society and many others (as displayed in our page).

Message from the Founder President

B Ramana

Trustee & Founder President

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the AWR Surgeons Community !

What began as a small idea - surgeons coming together to share their experiences in abdominal wall reconstruction and hernia surgery - has today grown into a vibrant movement. AWRSC is not just an academic group; it is a family of surgeons bound by the spirit of learning, collaboration, and service.

Our vision is simple yet powerful: to create a platform where knowledge flows freely, young surgeons find mentors, experienced surgeons share their wisdom, and innovation is celebrated. Every voice matters here, whether you are just starting your surgical journey or have decades of experience behind you.

This website is your space - a place to learn, contribute, and stay connected. From Tips & Tricks videos and case discussions to research collaborations and global talks, everything we do is aimed at making each of us better surgeons, and together, a stronger community

But beyond education and research, AWRSC stands for something deeper - camaraderie, support, and inspiration. When we come together, we don’t just share surgical techniques; we share values, encouragement, and the drive to push boundaries for the betterment of our patients.

I invite you to engage, participate, and make this community your own. Let us continue to learn, grow, and inspire each other - because when surgeons unite, the impact goes far beyond the operating room.

Together, we are the AWRSC family.

Warm regards,
Dr B Ramana
